Intelligence Bureau

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s internal intelligence agency. It is reputed to be the oldest intelligence agency in the country, established in 1887. The IB’s primary objective is to gather intelligence from within India and also execute counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism tasks. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Intelligence Bureau’s functions include:

  1. Internal Security: Monitoring and analyzing internal security threats within the country, including espionage, terrorism, and communalism.
  2. Counterintelligence: Detecting and preventing espionage activities by foreign intelligence agencies on Indian soil.
  3. Counterterrorism: Gathering intelligence on terrorist organizations and individuals, as well as thwarting terrorist activities.
  4. Border Security: Providing intelligence support for border security operations, especially in areas prone to infiltration and cross-border terrorism.
  5. Criminal Intelligence: Collecting intelligence related to organized crime, smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and other criminal activities.
  6. VIP Security: Providing security assessments and intelligence support for the protection of important dignitaries, including political leaders and visiting foreign officials.

The Intelligence Bureau operates through various means, including human intelligence (HUMINT), signals intelligence (SIGINT), and open-source intelligence (OSINT). It has a network of field agents, informants, and technical resources to gather and analyze intelligence data.
